Eye Exams & Testing

A comprehensive eye exam typically takes around 30–45 minutes. First-time patients may need a little extra time for paperwork and medical history. If additional testing such as dilation or corneal mapping is required, allow up to an hour.

Recommended frequency depends on your age and risk factors:

  • Ages 18–39: Every 2–3 years
  • Ages 40–54: Every 2 years
  • Ages 55–64: Every 1–2 years
  • Ages 65+: Annually
  • Children (3–17): Annually or as recommended
  • High-risk patients: As recommended by your optometrist

Please bring the following to your appointment:

  • Your Identity Document (ID) or Driver's Licence
  • Medical aid card (if applicable)

Dilation is sometimes necessary for a thorough eye health evaluation, especially for patients over 40 or those with risk factors such as diabetes or a family history of eye disease. The effects last 2–4 hours and may cause light sensitivity and temporary difficulty focusing on close objects.

We recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging alternative transportation if you need to drive after your appointment.

We accept most major South African medical aid schemes, including:

  • Gems
  • Platimun Health
  • Discovery Health
  • Momentum Health
  • Bonitas Medical Fund
  • Medihelp
  • Bestmed

Please contact your nearest branch to verify coverage under your specific plan.

Costs vary depending on your medical aid coverage and the type of examination required:

  • With medical aid: Often fully covered, or subject to a co-payment

  • Specialised testing: Additional fees may apply

Contact Lenses

Most people can wear contact lenses successfully. Good candidates typically have:

  • Healthy eyes with adequate tear production
  • Good hygiene habits
  • The ability to handle and care for lenses properly

We offer specialised lenses for astigmatism, presbyopia, and even dry eyes. A fitting consultation will determine the best option for you.

A complete contact lens fitting typically takes 45–60 minutes. This includes corneal assessment, trial lens fitting, insertion and removal training, and a comfort evaluation. Follow-up visits are included to ensure the lenses remain a good fit.

Replacement frequency depends on your lens type:

  • Daily disposables: Replace every day — no cleaning required
  • Weekly lenses: Replace every 1–2 weeks
  • Monthly lenses: Replace monthly
  • Extended wear: Follow your optometrist's specific guidance

Never wear lenses longer than recommended, even if they feel comfortable. Over-wearing lenses is a leading cause of serious eye infections.

Eyewear & Prescriptions

Typical timeframes for eyewear completion:

  • Standard prescriptions: 5–7 working days
  • Special coatings & treatments: 7–10 working days
  • Progressive lenses: 10–14 working days
  • Designer frames (ordered in): 2–3 weeks
  • Rush orders: Available for an additional fee — ask us

We will notify you as soon as your glasses are ready and will fit and adjust them for you at no extra charge.

Yes, we can fill prescriptions from other optometrists provided they are current — within 2 years for adults and within 1 year for children. However, we recommend having your eyes examined by our optometrists to ensure the most accurate and up-to-date prescription for the best possible visual outcome.

Emergency Eye Care

Seek immediate professional care if you experience any of the following:

  • Sudden vision loss or significant changes in vision
  • Eye trauma or physical injury
  • Foreign objects embedded in the eye
  • Chemical or liquid exposure to the eye
  • Severe eye pain or persistent discomfort
  • Sudden onset of flashes of light or new floaters
  • A curtain-like shadow across your vision
  • Rapid swelling, redness or discharge

For true eye emergencies outside of business hours, please call our emergency line 064 538 5715 for guidance. We can advise on immediate steps to take. For severe emergencies involving trauma or sudden vision loss, proceed immediately to your nearest hospital emergency room.

If a foreign object enters your eye, follow these steps:

  • Do NOT rub your eye — this can cause further damage or drive the object deeper
  • Blink frequently to encourage natural tear production
  • Rinse gently with clean water or sterile saline solution
  • If the object does not come out easily, do not try to remove it yourself
  • Cover the eye loosely and seek professional help immediately
  • For chemical or liquid exposure, flush the eye with running water for at least 15 minutes, then call us

For emergencies please contact our emergency number - 064 538 5715
